Understand PPI and DPI

How do pixels relate to print size?

The same image has a different effective PPI at every print size.

Pixels divided by PPI

Divide pixels by PPI to get the print length in inches.

Pixels stay unchanged

This calculator does not alter the image file or pixel count.

PPI is not printer DPI

PPI describes image pixels; DPI describes printer dots.

DPI/PPI calculator FAQ

Learn about free use, calculations and print-quality limits.
1Is this DPI/PPI calculator free?

Yes. It is free with no usage limit or account required.

2Are PPI and DPI the same?

Not exactly. PPI measures image pixels per inch, while DPI measures printer dots per inch. This tool calculates image PPI.

3Does setting 300 PPI improve image quality?

No. Changing a number alone does not create pixels. You need resampling or a larger source when there are not enough pixels.

4Is my image uploaded?

No. Your browser reads only its natural dimensions and never sends the file to our server.
